Devils Fly By the Habs, 4-1
by Melinda Quasius | Special to NY Sports Day | Saturday, January 3, 2009
NEWARK, NJ - The New Jersey Devils earned two very important points against the Montreal Canadiens Friday night at the Prudential Center. With a 4-1 victory, the Devs have moved into a temporary tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with the Philadelphia Flyers, before the Flyers beat Anaheim later in the evening. The win also pulled New Jersey within one point of Montreal in the standings, and two points of Atlantic Division co-leader New York Rangers. With many of their top players scratched with injuries, the Habs looked like the Devils of earlier in the season.“It changes dynamics on your team, but as an opposition you don’t get caught up in that. You worry about your own game and how you have to play. I don’t think anyone felt sorry for us when we went through that situation,” said Devils’ coach Brent Sutter.

Smith Off To Good Start
by Brian Bohl | Senior Writer - NY Sports Day | Friday, January 2, 2009
UNIONDALE, NY — Trevor Smith raced near the left circle and fired a hard shot that hit Panthers backup goalie Craig Anderson in the chest two minutes into the third period. Making his NHL debut, Smith came close to registering his first career goal. Instead, the 23-year-old had to settle for a 4-2 Islanders victory over Florida Wednesday afternoon at Nassau Coliseum.Smith was called up after the Islanders after veteran center Mike Sillinger was placed on injured reserve as he tries to recover from a hip injury that limited him to seven games this season and 52 during the 2006-07 campaign.Wearing No. 77, Smith played left wing on a line with veteran center Doug Weight and Richard Park. The rookie logged 10:58 of ice time, going minus-1 thanks to his time on the ice when Brett Mclean put the Panthers up by a goal to start the contest.

Isles Ring in New Year With a Win
by Brian Bohl | Senior Writer - NY Sports Day | Thursday, January 1, 2009
UNIONDALE, NY — Before the Islanders took the ice to face the Florida Panthers in a New Year’s Eve matinee, the club introduced mascots of comic book heroes like Spiderman and the Hulk.Ironman was also in attendance, though he did not take a picture with Rick DiPietro. The snapshot would have marked a dichotomy of durability, since the Isles franchise goaltender was once again unavailable for duty.DiPietro was scratched from the lineup and Joey MacDonald got the start as DiPietro continues to battle a groin problem. It marked the second straight game he sat out after picking up his first win of the season Friday, when the netminder with a 15-year contract made his temporary return following his October knee surgery to repair a meniscus.

Jets Fire Mangini
by Joe McDonald | Publisher and Editor-in-Chief | Monday, December 29, 2008
After a disappointing 1-4 finish to the season and another playoff miss, the Jets dismissed head coach Eric Mangini. The Jets coach was fired after the team failed to make the playoffs, despite a 8-3 start. What looked like a great Jet season fell apart in the past month with failures on the West Coast where the Jets lost to teams with under .500 records.“I appreciate everything Eric Mangini has done for this organization over the past three seasons. He is a bright, young football mind and I wish him success in the future,” said Jets owner Woody Johnson. “In our judgment, we made the decision we believe is in the best interest of the organization. We will begin the search for the next head coach of the Jets immediately.”

Mangini's Last Stand Ends in a Loss
by Brian Bohl | Senior Writer - NY Sports Day | Monday, December 29, 2008
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Help didn’t come for the Jets in the form of either a New England loss or a Baltimore defeat. In the end, it didn’t matter. After losing four West Coast games to non-playoff contenders, some would argue the Jets didn’t deserve a break. Yet even a late, if undeserved, holiday gift wouldn’t have made a difference since the Jets failed to take care of the only thing in the team’s control in a season-ending 24-17 loss to Miami.Chad Pennington, who the Jets cut in training camp after acquiring Brett Favre, threw for 200 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in helping the Dolphins clinch the AFC East title at the Meadowlands. Favre couldn’t match his counterpart, continuing his end-of-season struggles with the Jets losing four of its final five contests.

About Sports in New York |
The sports scene is almost a perfect representation of city in New York. The sports season is as densely crowded as the city itself. Every season brings a gluttony of teams to follow. Each summer the city flocks to buy Yankees tickets and Mets tickets to see the teams put together a great season. The city expects that these teams, often with big money invested in the rosters, are able to compete with the best in each league. It seems like every year at least one, if not both, are playing for the pennant.
These are two franchises that have won a collective 28 World Series. Though most of those have been because of the New York Yankees, the Mets have become a respected club in its short, but celebrated history. Eventually the muggy days of summer come to an end and the brisk winds of fall mean that football season has begun.
The Giants and the Jets may only have won a total of four Super Bowls, but the hallowed history of the Giants makes sure their team looms large every season. The Jets franchise is quite a bit younger, but they have not been a bad addition to the football landscape for New Yorkers. The boys in green first made their mark in the first few years of the Super Bowl and have been major player in the AFC East, whether sports fans realize it or not.
The winter months are unbearable in New York and sports recede in large arena. The Knicks may not have a recent history that many are jealous of, but Mike D'Antoni and Donnie Walsh are working to reverse the trend of the last few seasons at Madison Square Garden. The Nets schedule will soon be coming into the city and should elevate the rivalry between the two franchises as they are most certainly fighting for the same basketball fans desperate for the high level of competition both team once displayed on a nightly basis.
The rest of the nation may have forgotten about the NHL, but this city still loves the sport that promises slap shots and bloody noses. The Rangers, Islanders, and Devils give New Yorkers three hockey teams to choose from. The Devils and the Rangers have been providing the playoff action for the last few seasons, but the Islanders are starting to move the club in a new direction. |
