Bridgeport, CT – August 28, 2004 – The Bridgeport Bluefish were defeated by the Newark Bears, 18-4, in front of 4,193 fans at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
The Bluefish took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Willis Otanez hit a RBI single to left field, allowing Rolo Avila to score from second base.
With two outs in the top of the second, Newark’s Jason Dewey singled home Keith Maxwell and Chris Van Rossum, putting the Bears up 2-1. Maxwell was walked and Van Rossum doubled to right field to put them in scoring position for Dewey. Newark added additional runs in the third and fourth innings, making the score 4-1.
Bridgeport capitalized in the bottom of the fourth and scored three runs to tie the game. The inning ended when first base umpire called Nick Ortiz out for leaving first base too soon, allowing the fourth run to still count due to a tie play.
The Bears took advantage of four runs in the top of the fifth and one in the sixth to take a five run lead over the ‘Fish. Three of Newark’s runs in the fifth were scored when Jose Olmeda hit a homerun over the left field wall.
Newark continued the scoring in the ninth inning when they tallied nine additional runs.
Bluefish starter Stevenson Agosto went four innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits, with three strikeouts and four walks. Terrence Hill, Ryan Schurman and Shane Arthurs pitched in relief for the ‘Fish. Gustavo Escobar also made his first professional appearance as a pitcher, facing four batters in the ninth inning.
